Japan’s iPhone Killer - What?

Nani Phone

Yes, iPhone fever is everywhere, and probably will be around for some time to come. One thing for certain is that there will be no shortage of Asian knock-offs, hoping to capitalise on the success of the gadget. This latest contender comes from Sophia Mobile, with the touchscreen-enabled Nani (literally, “What?” in Japanese) . It boasts a “4.3-inch touchscreen, video playback at 800 x 400 pixels, a MicroSD card slot, Wi-Fi capability, a camera and a TV tuner”. Mobile TV sounds particularly juicy - it would be a great way to catch up on news and shows while commuting.

You never know - it could be the next iPhone killer, or maybe it could be just a stopgap for those outside the US still waiting to get their hands on an iPhone.

Motorola Announces Ojo Personal Video Phone

Be well, John Spartan. Motorola have announced the Motorola Ojo™ Personal Video Phone, which sends face-to-face conversations – complete with full-motion video and synchronized audio – over any high-speed Internet connection.

“Consumers can now experience first-hand the power of visual communications by bringing a Motorola Ojo into their connected home,” said David Grubb, vice president, Motorola consumer entertainment solutions. “The Motorola Ojo lets loved ones share personal moments and make new memories even though they might be thousands of miles apart. By enhancing the traditional voice call with real-time video, Ojo lets you now truly be there, even if you can’t get there.“

At $799(USD) a pop though, you better know what you’re getting into. PC Magazine has a review of the phone here.

I think I’ll miss taking phone calls in my underwear… :D

Archos AV420 Pocket Video Recorder - I want one!

Today, we had a representative from Archos Australia come over and demonstrate the Archos range. The Archos AV420 was the one that grabbed my attention due to its ease of use particularly in recording TV shows - it’s just a matter of making sure it’s connected to your TV then pressing the record button. Parents, take heed! You don’t need your teenager to help you out with this one!

Gear Live have got a great review that is complete with pictures of the Archos AV420 at all angles - be sure to check it out!

Full Length Movies on Mobiles

While South Korea has been busy launching their Satelite-based mobile TV service, Nokia, Granada Ventures and ROK Player are launching the world’s first full-length movie pre-loaded on memory cards. Anyone with a memory card compatible handset is free to watch the full 142 minute movie whenever and wherever they are - even outside of mobile coverage areas.

“The ROK Player is carried on patent-pending Digital Video Chip™ (DVC™) technology that slots into the phone’s multi-media card holder. It works with a wide range of multi-media card compatible phones. The Digital Video Chip slots into the reader, and the handset is then ready to show full-screen, feature length video content.”

The first movie they are launching is the timeless classic: The Shawshank Redemption. Now, to find a spare 142 minutes while you’re out and about…

Satelite Based Mobile TV

Watching TV on mobiles became a reality today for South Koreans - the first in the world - when TU Media Corp launched its Satelite-based mobile TV service to SK Telecom users, the country’s largest mobile phone operator.

“As of Saturday, there were about 28,000 mobile phones and palm-size monitors in cars nationwide which could receive the service. TU Media plans to provide seven video and 20 audio channels for the time being, and later expand the total number of channels to more than 40 when it can relay terrestrial TV programs.”

Unfortunately though, a special handset equipped with the antenna and chips is needed to receive the satellite signals.
