Most of us digital photographers have unused memory cards lying around idle. Well you can now turn them into USB storage space using the keychain-sized XtraDrive from MediaGear.

XtraDrives have a colored, transparent cap that allows the user to see if a media card is installed. Also, to eliminate crowding of several drives together on a PC or notebook, the XtraDrive package also includes a USB adapter cable.

The drives can accommodate most card formats including Secure Digital (SD), MultiMediaCard, Sony Memory Stick, Compact Flash Types I and II, MicroDrives, SmartMedia and xD, and is priced at $14.95 (USD) from the MediaGear website (www.mymediagear.com).

FULL PRESS RELEASE
MediaGear Launches New See-Through XtraDrive That Turns Your Unused Flash Memory Cards into Convenient USB Drives

SANTA ANA, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–May 3, 2005–MediaGear announced the next generation of its popular Keychain drives called “XtraDrive”, to help satisfy the growing consumer demand for convenient extra USB flash drives created from unused memory cards.

XtraDrives have a colored, transparent cap that allows the user to see if a media card is installed. Also, to eliminate crowding of several drives together on a PC or notebook, the XtraDrive package also includes a USB adapter cable.

“Photographers have an abundance of old memory cards that are no longer used because of their low megabyte storage. The new XtraDrive gives these outdated memory cards a brand new life,” noted Terry Smith, VP of Marketing at MediaGear.

“Most new cameras come with a 16 or 32 MB card and the photographer quickly moves up to higher capacities – especially now that prices are dropping. The digital camera user can pop these outdated flash memory cards into a compatible XtraDrive and easily load and transfer data or photos from computer to computer via the USB ports,” continued Smith.

An added bonus of this new generation of Keychain drives is the inclusion of an 18″ USB cable for use when slots on the computer are too cramped for space.

“The new XtraDrives are great looking too. We went for see-through colorful, gem tone caps that are visually appealing, but more importantly allows the user to see if a memory card is already inserted into the drive,” added Smith.

Retail pricing is: $14.95 MSRP. The new USB-compatible XtraDrives is currently available at Office Depot, MicroCenter and Fry’s Electronics, and from the MediaGear website (www.mymediagear.com).

The drives can accommodate most card formats including Secure Digital (SD), MultiMediaCard, Sony Memory Stick, Compact Flash Types I and II, MicroDrives, SmartMedia and xD.

300 dpi digital images of the new XtraDrives can be downloaded from http://web.mymediagear.com/Portals/2/pro_images/xtradrive.jpg.

While South Korea has been busy launching their Satelite-based mobile TV service, Nokia, Granada Ventures and ROK Player are launching the world’s first full-length movie pre-loaded on memory cards. Anyone with a memory card compatible handset is free to watch the full 142 minute movie whenever and wherever they are – even outside of mobile coverage areas.

“The ROK Player is carried on patent-pending Digital Video Chip™ (DVC™) technology that slots into the phone’s multi-media card holder. It works with a wide range of multi-media card compatible phones. The Digital Video Chip slots into the reader, and the handset is then ready to show full-screen, feature length video content.”

The first movie they are launching is the timeless classic: The Shawshank Redemption. Now, to find a spare 142 minutes while you’re out and about…

If you’ve ever wondered where the Swiss Army Knife came from or got its name, the Swiss Army started equipping every soldier with a pocket knife as far back as 1896. Since September 11 though, manufacturers have been having it tough and have been reinventing one of the world’s best-known and most enduring tools.

Victorinox is one such manufacturer, and “is seeking to turn the symbol of Swiss quality and reliability into a can’t-do-without product for high-tech aficionados. It is embracing electronic gadgetry, notably the memory stick for storing and transporting presentations or database files.

Depending on the model, its SwissMemory knife can store 64 to 512 megabytes of memory, and can be plugged into a computer’s USB port. The knives’ prices range from $71 to $150.”

Now, that is one sharp gadget.
